In this issue, we cover our top five shade structures of all time.

For Australians, an emphasis on quality shade and UV protection is something we are raised to value, especially with our love for outdoor entertaining in the holiday season.

This is why we do what we do – for the love of the outdoors! It’s hard to believe how fast the last 12 months have flown for Terrain Group. In 2021 we’ve accomplished some of our biggest projects to date, with an exciting 2022 on the way.

Shelter 1: Sellicks Beach Shelter

Client: City of Onkaparinga, SA

Updating a 1940s shelter known and accepted by the Sellicks Beach community was no mean feat. A local spot for watching schools of fish, and equipped with a shark bell to warn swimmers, the original shelter was hit by an aggressive storm in 2016 and was subsequently demolished.

Discussions with the City of Onkaparinga Council began some 2 years prior to project commencement, ensuring an in-depth community consultation process and a conceptual shelter design harmonious with the look and history of the clifftop site.The final design was customised from our much-loved Capricorn Shelter.

To define the area, Carey Gully sandstone was craned onto site to form a protective barrier between the shelter and the dangerous slope below. New groundworks preceded the installation of the shelter and a Daintree picnic setting before getting to work on a new wheelchair-friendly boardwalk – both constructed using recycled materials. Taking a lengthy nine weeks in contrast to our usual two, we’re endlessly proud of this shelter, made with a huge amount of community input and now sitting in perfect sympathy with its surroundings.

Shelter 2: City of Casey Municipality Shelter

Client: City of Onkaparinga, SA

The brief: A very, very long shelter to fit a very long picnic table for families to meet. Next to a playground in Victoria’s fastest-growing municipality, this custom 18m long structure combined 12m of shelter and a further 6m of arbour-style frame to rise over a sandpit. With a desired timeframe of just three months, our team quickly got to work negotiating with the local council and customising our much-loved Capricorn Shelter to suit the brief requirements.

Working in sync with Super Gardens landscaping, the shelter was delivered to the site as a flat-packed kit for easy assembly by the team. We were pleased to work with such a highly professional team to install the shelter prior to their landscaping works. With our customer care team ready to answer their assembly questions at any time, the project was a collaborative job well done.

Shelter 3: Miravale Housing Estate Shelter, Angle Vale

Client: City of Onkaparinga, SA

This up-and-coming Angle Vale address offers modern, affordable living in the suburbs. We were tasked with building a shelter to help activate the outdoor public space of the new housing estate. This 10m x 5m shelter was designed to suit the style of the development in which it resides; with anodised aluminium black structure and screening to the high sides, and Manor red Colorbond sheeting to the roof. The result, a stylish shelter that can be used by all Miravale’s residents!

Shelter 4: Barossa Wave Shelter, Coast Park Brighton

Client: City of Onkaparinga, SA

Briefed by the City of Holdfast Bay, as part of a $5.3 million dollar project to create a spacious coastal pathway, the council wanted a shelter that could accommodate a couple of groups without encumbering on the pristine Brighton coastline. Under a waved roof that doesn’t impinge on the skyline, the lookout sits at the curve of the esplanade, and provides a sheltered spot for locals and visitors alike to sit and take in beautiful Brighton Beach.

Shelter 5: All in 1 – Port Kenny Restroom and Shelter

Client: Elliston Council, SA

Set in a popular camping ground, the Elliston Council wanted a new restroom and shelter to provide campers with an all-season shelter and restroom facility. A popular spot for seafood lovers, Port Kenny is known for delivering some of the best prawns on the Eyre Peninsula. We constructed a modular restroom and extended shelter to allow tired campers a moment’s respite from the elements!
