Karoonda uses custom Terrain shelter to project Silo art

Being part of communities and some really phenomenal projects is something we absolutely love. One such project was the Colour Up Karoonda.

Karoonda raised the bar for silo art, with an Australian first combining a stunning daytime mural and evening illuminated projections into a spectacular attraction to be enjoyed both day and night.

The projections, created by illumination specialists Illuminart, were launched to a huge crowd at the Colour Up Karoonda festival held on 16 June 2019.

Terrain Group was so excited to be part of this wonderful community project and were the winning tenderer for the shade structure request for quote.

The project also features the Elements Access table setting, seats, drink fountains and the shelters.

One of the shelter’s housed the projector used for the murals to be projected on the silos at night.

Managing Director of Terrain Group, Steve Selby said:

“ It was a fantastic project to be part of and to work closely with the Karoonda East Murray Council to develop their vision for the Colour Up Karoonda event. From the early days when hand sketches and ideas were being shared across the table, to the finished result & see it operational is a great milestone. The shelter which housed the projection box to illuminate the nearby silos, was customised to accommodate expensive illumination equipment  providing a dust proof and insulated environment in the top of the structure.”

1800 people enjoyed the afternoon of celebration with a street party, live music, market and family activities, before the crowd filled the town’s main street for the big switch-on.

District Council of Karoonda East Murray Mayor Caroline Phillips said securing an artist of Heesco’s calibre was a coup for Karoonda.

“This unique artwork, created by one of Australia’s highly regarded street artists, will combine with the incredible illumination projections to deliver an attraction for Karoonda that is truly special and absolutely unique when compared to others nationally.”

This collection of evening projections will continue until 18 July. But that won’t be the end of evening art in Karoonda.

Permanent projection equipment within Terrain Group’s shelter will enable the ongoing use of the silos as a giant canvas for unique exhibitions – ranging from art to historic photographs.
