15 years at Terrain Group

A 15-year Terrain Group veteran, Josh Gould started at the company when he was just 20.

Now, at 35, he is usually on-site everyday putting up a shelter, digging up the ground for a water project or constructing a public amenities’ building.

We asked him about his journey so far at the Terrain Group.

Start off with…

One of the blokes who used to work here earlier, asked me come and work with him a couple of days a week and have been here since.

Best part about the job…

I love to work outside and this job gives me that opportunity. I was a bar manager for 7 years and it was all inside. This is different as everyday you are at a different location.

Kind of people/projects you meet and do…

The projects are always good; the people aren’t always. You do clash with other blokes sometimes. The projects are exciting as you rock up to a different place everyday and do a variety of things depending on the project. I get to get out of Adelaide a fair bit as I am not a big city fan.

Favourite project…

It has to be the Golf course in Tumby Bay near Port Lincoln that was a pretty good project to work on. We were there for about 4 months; it got me out of the city and back in the bush, which is always good. The location was amazing and I hadn’t been to the Eyre Peninsula since I was 10, so it was great and I had some mates who had moved over there too, so had a chance to catch up with them. The job was smooth and the council was great to work with.

Challenges faced on the job…

There are no challenges really as everything is workable and everything can be fixed. When you are long way from home though bits are missing and its not always good, you can’t just duck around and pick them up. Most of the time it’s always pretty good

Depends on what we are doing, when we started a couple of years ago it was all new – the buildings, the construction trying to learn new things and work out easy ways to do everything but in the irrigation thing now I can cruise through it and enjoy it the most as you can go a few months later and see the end product when the grass is all regrown. Accomplishing something is great.

Learnt from Terrain…

The one main learning for me has been to work as efficiently as you can. So when you go on site, you have got everything and you don’t go back and forth. It doesn’t always work that way though, especially when you are digging underground there’s always something you don’t know. We try and work out what could go wrong and work out what’s best before we go on to the site.

Terrain Group’s achievement…

Other than me being here, the products are very good and that’s the main thing. Most people look at the end product and fork out a lot of money on it, so if we give good quality products and great customer service then that’s what makes it worth it for them.

Looking forward to…

I am excited about this water reserve project coming up down West Torrens Council, we have been doing jobs for them for 15 years, they are probably the longest customer I know of. Moreover, it’s the same boys I have been dealing with for the last 15 years at the council, and I always look forward to going out there and catch up with them.
